Tips and Tricks for Making Sweet Potato Pup-Chews

  • My favorite tip might be loading up on sweet potatoes during the week of Thanksgiving. I just bought sweet potatoes for 25 cents per pound! My friend asked what in the world I was planning to do with the 15 pounds of sweet potatoes laying on my counter. So. Many. Things!
  • Use long, thin (about 2-ish inch diameter) sweet potatoes for uniform slices and bake times. Using larger potatoes or slicing strips instead of rounds are options also, but may require longer bake-time.
  • Use a mandoline slicer to create uniform sweet potato slices in no time! You can be sure each slice will look uniform and bake evenly.
  • Dust with cinnamon before baking because your canine buddy with love it. And your house will smell amazing while these bake!
  • Make sure to bake until the snacks are fully dried for the best chew and the longest shelf-life.

Oh The Chew!

My sweet Opie ingests most treats in a gulp – nary even a chew! Sometimes I wonder if he even knows he ate treat… But each of these little bites takes quite a bit of chewing, so the enjoyment lasts. I keep a jar of Sweet Potato Pup-Chews in my kitchen so I can hand my furry side-kick, Opie, one for a good sit or… a couple… just being awesome on the regular! The American Kennel Club agrees that hand feeding your pup comes with many benefits, including relationship building! So bake up a big batch and treat your doggo to a nutritious, delicious bit of relationship-building wellness every day!

Patient waiting…….
The pup-chew approaches!
The yummy chewing begins!

Ingredients

  • Sweet Potatoes I choose long, thin in diameter (maybe 2ish inches) potatoes for evenly sized treats
  • Cinnamon, if desired

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 200°F. Cover a cookie sheet/s or jelly roll pan/s with parchment.
  • Set mandoline slicer to 3/16th and slice as many sweet potato rounds as you please. Or slice by hand in about 3/16th inch thickness.
  • Place the sliced rounds on the parchment (not overlapping) and ideally not touching. Sprinkle with cinnamon, if desired.
  • Bake for 2 hours or until dry. Check for doneness starting at about 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Cool on the baking sheet and then store in a sealed container.

Notes

Remember, using larger potatoes will require longer baking time. Treats should be fully dry when done.

I'm Anna.

I believe in The Power of Yum. That is - food should feed hearts and souls, not just bellies. Making - or shall I say "creating"- food should be a therapeutic outlet toward a most yummy end. Serving and sharing food should be a time of fun, relaxation, and connecting with each other. Welcome to The Power of Yum!
